Individual Health Insurance Options in Florida

In many ways, individuals have the same general coverage options as members of group policy, but at a higher cost. One of the first major health insurance products was an HMO, a managed care solution which provided comprehensive major medical coverage, but limited policyholder choice. Recognizing how these regulated plans limited individual choice, most insurance providers now offer PPO choices, so that those who are not a part of an insurance plan through their employer are still able to receive the coverage they need with the options they choose.

Additional services such as dental, vision and other “accessory” services may be difficult for an individual to receive because these plans are typically viewed as 'add-ons' to a group policy, but it is also possible to receive a separate dental plan, or discounts on such services, through an individual policy.

The Health Savings Account, a self-regulated coverage product which partners a savings account with a PPO, is often another good choice for individuals. With an HSA, members can put money into a tax-advantaged savings account and draw money from the account as needed throughout the year to pay for medical costs. Similar to an IRA, the HSA deposits rolls over each year, so that the remaining balance in the account is always accessible.

Individuals who are looking for temporary coverage, long-term-care protection, accident insurance or disability benefits may be able to enroll through a larger insurance company for relatively low premium costs. Some companies also offer supplemental insurance, to cover needs such as extended hospital stays and emergency services. These supplementary policies may also provide such extended individual benefits as cancer coverage and life insurance.
