Florida Health Insurance for Temporary Situations

One certainty about life is that it is capricious. You can make detailed plans for the future, but you should be prepared for a few side-trips. Floridians are well aware of this unpredictability. Used to basking under a glorious sun, residents of this state can find themselves soaking from a sudden thunderstorm or looking in the face of a hurricane.

Keeping yourself protected with adequate health insurance can be as challenging as keeping up with the weather. One minute, you are covered by a group health plan through an employer, and the next minute, you, your spouse, or (in the case of a student) your parent no longer has that job. Temporary health insurance can be your port in a storm until you find your next path in life.

Do You Need Temporary Health Coverage in Florida?

Florida residents who are in a period of transition and might need temporary health insurance frequently fall into these categories:

  • Graduating from college, but without a job yet. These individuals will no longer be covered by their parents’ health insurance, and will not be covered by an employer’s group policy for a few months at best.

  • Recently divorced or widowed. These individuals may have been covered by their spouse’s health insurance policy, but will need to find their own policy.

  • Recently unemployed. These people have lost their health insurance benefits when they lost their jobs. While they are eligible for COBRA, it is expensive. They need a more economical short-term health insurance solution while they re-order their lives.

Types of Temporary Health Insurance:

  • COBRA continuation of coverage: If you were covered by a group policy, you have the right to continue that coverage for eighteen months, if you pay the premiums. You have sixty days to make the decision to continue.

  • Personal temporary insurance policies: There are affordable temporary health insurance policies available for six months or a year that can cover major medical emergencies. These plans are usually less expensive than COBRA and may be enough coverage to get you through the time until you have group coverage with another employer.

  • Individual insurance policies: Many of the larger health insurance companies offer inexpensive individual policies. You may be able to find an individual policy with the same group that covered you before – or with the group that covers the employees at your new job.
